Distributions of lesser mealworm, Alphitobius diaperinus (Panzer) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), in litter of a compacted earth floor broiler house in southeastern Queensland, Australia, were studied over two flocks. Larvae were the predominant stage recorded. Significantly low densities occurred in open locations and under drinker cups where chickens had complete access, whereas high densities were found under feed pans and along house edges where chicken access was restricted. For each flock, lesser mealworm numbers increased at all locations over the first 14 d, especially under feed pans and along house edges, peaking at approximately 26 d and then declining over the final 28 d. A life stage profile per flock was devised that consisted of the following: beetles emerge from the earth floor at the beginning of each flock, and females lay eggs, producing larvae that peak in numbers at approximately 3 wk; after a further 3 to 4 wk, larvae leave litter to pupate in the earth floor, and beetles then emerge by the end of the flock time. Removing old litter from the brooder section at the end of a flock did not greatly reduce mealworm numbers over the subsequent flock, but it seemed to prevent numbers increasing, while an increase in numbers in the grow-out section was recorded after reusing litter. Areas under feed pans and along house edges accounted for 5% of the total house area, but approximately half the estimated total number of lesser mealworms in the broiler house occurred in these locations. The results of this study will be used to determine optimal deployment of site-specific treatments for lesser mealworm control.  相似文献

Abstract  Chemical similarities among ancient Angiosperms presumably played a role in the ecological and evolutionary diversification of the swallowtail butterflies (Papilionidae). The abilities of neonate larvae of the Citrus swallowtail, Papilio (= Princeps ) aegeus (from Queensland, Australia), to eat, survive and grow on leaves (a choice of young and old) of 34 plant species from families of ancient Angiosperms; 8 Rutaceae, 3 Magnoliaceae, 13 Lauraceae, 3 Monimiaceae, 1 Aristolochiaceae, 2 Apiaceae, 1 Sapotaceae, 1 Winteraceae and 2 Annonaceae were tested. It was apparent that there is genetic variation in populations of Rutaceae-specialised Australian P. aegeus for acceptance, consumption and larval growth, reflecting differential suitability of some native Australian Lauraceae species as food plants (as well as certain Winteraceae, Monimiaceae and non-Australian Magnoliaceae, Lauraceae and Annonaceae). No consumption or survival of P. aegeus was seen on Aristolochia elegans (Aristolochiaceae) or Pouteria australis (Sapotaceae) despite literature records alluding to this possibility. The Rutaceae specialist P. aegeus appears to have the fundamental detoxification capabilities for processing many existing species of the basal Angiosperm families, without having direct ancestors that historically had fed on them.  相似文献

  • 1 Understanding the spatio‐temporal dynamics of insects in agroecosystems is crucial when developing effective management strategies that emphasize the biological control of pests.
  • 2 Wild populations of Trichogramma Westwood egg parasitoids are utilized for the biological suppression of the potentially resistant pest species Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) in Bt‐transgenic cotton Gossypium hirsutum L. crops in the Ord River Irrigation Area (ORIA), Western Australia, Australia.
  • 3 Extensive, spatially‐stratified sampling during a season of relatively high Trichogramma abundance found that spatial patterns of pest egg parasitism in the ORIA tend toward heterogeneity, and do not necessarily coincide with host spatio‐temporal dynamics. Both patterns of host egg density and mean rates of parasitism are not good indicators of parasitoid spatio‐temporal dynamics in ORIA cotton crops.
  • 4 Parasitism rates can be significantly higher within the middle strata of the cotton plant canopy before complete canopy closure, despite a similar number of host eggs being available elsewhere in the plant.
  • 5 Spatial variation in egg parasitism by Trichogramma in Bt‐transgenic cotton is evident at the between‐field, within‐field and within‐plant scale, and is not solely driven by host spatial dynamics. These factors should be considered when estimating Trichogramma impact on pest species during biological control and spatio‐temporal studies of host‐parasitoid interactions in general.

Experiments were conducted to determine feeding site preferences of Crocidolomia pavonana (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) larvae within cabbage plants, Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata cv. Warrior (Brassicaceae), and to determine whether induced plant responses to herbivory affect the behavior of larvae. In the first experiment, intra-plant damage and larval distribution were recorded to account for the spreading pattern of damage and larval feeding behavior on a plant; larvae initially fed on the base of leaves and moved progressively to the bud, leaf tips were avoided. In the second experiment, larval performance (the duration of the first instar, survival to the second instar, and weight of second instars) was assessed when larvae fed on the bud, the base, and the tip of the youngest fully expanded leaf on a plant. Crocidolomia pavonana larvae performed best when they fed on bud leaf tissue and most poorly when they fed on leaf tissue at the base of leaves. In the third experiment, expression of induced resistance was tested on each of the three plant parts using a first-instar bioassay. Negative impacts on larval growth and development were not detected when larvae fed on the bud or base tissue when plants were damaged prior to the assay. However, negative effects were detected in larvae feeding on tip leaf tissue when the base of the leaf was damaged prior to the assay or if the bud tissue was damaged simultaneously with the assay. The findings indicate that resource heterogeneity for C. pavonana within-cabbage plants is determined by both the initial quality of food at a location and by subsequent induced changes as a result of larval feeding; both contribute to the feeding pattern observed in these gregarious larvae.  相似文献

Positive phototaxis and negative geotaxis are behaviours that 1st instar Helicoverpa armigera use to direct their foraging movement upward towards nutritious new plant growth and reproductive structures. Odours emitted by fruits or seeds can attract larvae directly via chemotaxis. In this study we clarify the effect of leaf and flower odours on foraging 1st instar H. armigera. Using a Y-tube olfactometer we tested for chemotaxis towards two plant volatiles and found larvae were not attracted. Bioassays for phototaxis towards UV, blue, green and white light showed that a green leaf volatile ((Z)-3-hexenyl acetate) and a flower volatile (phenylacetaldehyde) reduced larval phototaxis towards blue light. Feeding on a host plant reduced phototaxis towards blue and green light. We concluded that the upward movement of 1st instars on plants is largely due to phototaxis towards the blue wavelengths of skylight. Plant attributes such as volatile chemicals affect the expression of phototaxis and therefore, indirectly influence larval movement to locate food resources. In this study, the question of whether Childers canegrub, Antitrogus parvulus (Britton) overwinters in the subsoil was addressed. Irrigated fields of sugarcane were sampled during a 2-year period near Bundaberg in southern Queensland. Antitrogus parvulus overwintered as second and third instars at each of three sites. During autumn and winter third instars of different allochronic (separated in age by 12 months) populations occurred together and could not be readily separated. Field-collected third instars were reared on ryegrass and separated into two age groups based on the date of pupation. Third instars in the first year of their life cycle (young third instars) remained at shallow depth (100-200 mm) and did not overwinter in the subsoil as once thought. Minimum temperatures during winter were 13-16 degrees C and did not prevent young third instars from feeding and gaining weight. Third instars in their second and final year moved downwards from late summer and pupated in the subsoil at 293-425 mm in spring. General phenology was as previously reported with first instar larvae occurring from January until April, second instars from January until November and third instar larvae throughout the year. Prepupae and pupae were found between October and December and adults occurred in soil during November and January. Batches of eggs occurred at a mean depth of 350 mm. First and second instars occurred predominantly at relatively shallow (100-200 mm) depths in the soil profile. All stages tended to be most common under rows of sugarcane rather than in the interrow.  相似文献

Measuring the mean duration of synthesis-phase (Ts) and of the total cell-cycle (Tc) within progenitor cell populations can provide important insights into the biology governing these cells. Rather than a passive process that shows little variability across cellular contexts, the cell-cycle is instead highly regulated. For example, in the rodent forebrain, Ts is selectively lengthened in radial glial progenitor cells undergoing symmetric versus asymmetric division. This lengthening is thought to minimize the potential for copying errors that can occur during DNA replication. Manipulating cell-cycle duration can also affect cell fate, demonstrating that in certain circumstances cell-cycle duration is an instructive process. Currently, cell-cycle length is typically measured using either cumulative labeling with a single thymidine analogue, or via dual thymidine analogue labeling approaches. However, these methods are often time-consuming and inefficient. Here, using the embryonic mouse cerebral cortex as a model system, we describe a simplified dual thymidine analogue protocol using BrdU and EdU that can be used to measure Ts and Tc. The advantage of this protocol over cumulative labeling approaches is that only a single time-point is required for measurement. An additional benefit of this protocol over existing dual-analog approaches (CldU/IdU) is the antibody-free detection of EdU and the acid-free detection of BrdU, processes allowing for the parallel use of specific antibodies so as to measure the cell-cycle in immunologically defined cellular subpopulations.  相似文献

Summary Infra-red aerial photography was used on two occasions to map the abundance and dispersion of milkweeds (Asclepias spp.). The scale at which the aerial photographs could be interpreted showed that milkweeds occur in large contiguous areas or patches. These patches are abundant, the number in any size-class declining exponentially with increasing size. Analysis of the maps using various dispersion indices and spatial autocorrelation statistic showed that patches have a clumped dispersion. Large patches tend to be surrounded by smaller sized patches. The scales at which clumping occurred indicated a close association between milkweeds and the degree of disturbance of the natural environment by human activities. The utility of resource mapping using aerial photography is demonstrated.  相似文献

Non-optimal codons are defined by low usage and low abundance of corresponding tRNA, and have an established role in translational pausing to allow the correct folding of proteins. Our previous work reported a striking abundance of non-optimal codons in the signal sequences of secretory proteins exported via the sec-dependent pathway in Escherichia coli. In the current study the signal sequence of maltose-binding protein (MBP) was altered so that non-optimal codons were substituted with the most optimal codon from their synonymous codon family. The expression of MBP from the optimized allele (malE-opt) was significantly less than wild-type malE. Expression of MBP from malE-opt was partially restored in a range of cytoplasmic and periplasmic protease deficient strains, confirming that reduced expression of MBP in malE-opt was due to its preferential degradation by cytoplasmic and periplasmic proteases. These data confirm a novel role for non-optimal codon usage in secretion by slowing the rate of translation across the N-terminal signal sequence to facilitate proper folding of the secreted protein.  相似文献
